What would the impact be of losing your digital information? What happens when you open the lid of your laptop, or jiggle the mouse of your desktop computer? What about your smart phone, does it have a lock code or pattern lock? If you’re like most people you choose convenience over security. Generally, the more convenient a thing is, the less secure. If a criminal were to get his/her hands on your laptop, could they easily open the lid and be greeted by the desktop with no password required? Once there, how hard will it be to open your favorite web browser and from your browser history log into your favorite on-line banking site where you once clicked “remember my password”?
My favorite actor John Wayne once said “Life is hard; it’s harder if you’re stupid.” It is one thing to lose your laptop or smart phone through no fault of your own, it’s another to lose your personal information that could have been protected. My free advise to those that will listen: take the extra — albiet inconvenient — steps to secure your personal electronic information. It’ll be worth it in the long run.
