A guy named Harry Guinness published an article about the importance of owning your own name. More specifically your own domain name. He points to the advantages of being able to direct yourname.com to a website, your twitter account, facebook account or anywhere else you please. There are also advantages of gaining control of what people find when they search for you and just as importantly preventing someone else from taking your name and gaining control of what people find when they search for you!
We’ve seen this personally and have actually obtained domain names for clients looking to “hide” things from Google and Yahoo searches. You don’t really hide search results but you do make positive stories much easier to find thereby knocking the negative stories to page two or three. A $10 domain name is a cheap way to get negative search results for you bumped to page two.
Prices on domain names fluctuate throughout the year based on various sales. Currently domain name registration from www.TheComputerBoy.com are:
- .com = $9.99 a year
- .org = $5.93
- .net = $7.14
- .info = $6.59
- .biz = 7.99
- .us = $8.24
